This Massive Pileup On A Chinese Highway Is Something From A Disaster Movie

By

China might be the world’s next superpower, but drivers in the Asian country are also notorious for their recklessness on the road and disturbingly high body count. There are many possible reasons for this, but no single cause that the government can hone in on.

Sadly, this fact doesn’t just take a toll on those driving, it also costs the national economy big time. If you think I’m exaggerating, then just take a look at the video below of a 20-car pileup on a highway in China’s Jiangsu province. If you think the complete shutdown of a highway right near a major city won’t impact the economy, then I have some bad news for you…

The World Health Organization found that each year at least 200,000 people die in China from car accidents.

While investigators are still determining the exact cause of this pileup, inclement weather is thought to have played a role.

Even though it looks devastating, miraculously only two people were killed.

The massive accident marked the traditional memorial day of Qingming, or Tomb-Sweeping Day.

During the holiday, people in China visit the tombs of their ancestors and pay homage to them. It usually takes place on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, which typically falls on April 4 or 5.

This is just horrifying. Good thing China has a pretty robust rail system. I don’t think I could survive on the roads there if I had to drive from place to place.
