Halloween season is in full force, and while you might distract yourself with pictures of funny costumes or Jack-O-Lanterns carved by people with too much time on their hands, it’s important to remember the real meaning of the holiday: scaring unsuspecting people.

From horror movies and scary stories to haunted houses and elaborate yard displays, there’s no shortage of opportunities to scare or be scared during the month of October. I remember people in masks jumping out of the bushes when I was trick-or-treating as a kid, but people these days are taking things to the next level.

It turns out all you really need to make people freak out is a really good makeup artist and the willingness to be punched in the face after popping out in front of someone in a dark alley.

Luckily, everyone in these videos (with one exception) was able to avoid that fate, making these some of the best Halloween-related pranks I’ve come across.

The Flying Ghoul

Anyone can pop on a scary mask, hide in a closet and wait for a couple of hours to pop out unexpectedly. It might work, but it’s not exactly the most original way to scare someone.

Not many people can tie a terrifying demon to a remote-control helicopter and use it to chase after unsuspecting people in a public setting. It doesn’t matter how rational of a thing you think you are: all bets are off when you get dive-bombed by a ghoul.

The Girl From “The Ring”

It’s never really clear what motivated the girl from “The Ring” to do all of the evil things she does, but my theory is that she was really mad about having her hair constantly covering her face and could only vent her frustrations by murdering people.

I’m sure there’s someone out there who knows far too much about the mythology of “The Ring” and can tell us the real reason she decided to become a malevolent spirit, but regardless, she definitely has the look down.

In this situation, that’s really all that matters.

The Ouija Board

Ouija boards are a mass-market portal to the afterlife and a popular tool amongst impressionable people who believe ghosts have the answer to everything. Despite literally being a piece of wood, people have been using them to communicate with the afterlife since the 19th century.

You don’t need much more than an Ouija board to mess with gullible people, but it helps if you also have someone dressed as a ghost hiding under the floorboards and a psychic who can make her eyes pop out of her head. That’s called being “convincing.”

The Vampire

Vampires have been one of the more feared supernatural beings over the last few centuries, but after the whole “Twilight” debacle, they have a bit of work to do before people take them seriously again.

This prank is a step in the right direction. I’m sure everyone here regretted not grabbing a clove of garlic and wooden stake before leaving their house for the night. There’s no such thing as being too prepared.

Zombies Invade New York City

I still can’t figure out if “flesh-eating zombies” is a redundant phrase, but regardless of the specific terminology, they’ve experienced a bit of a renaissance over the past few years.

Thanks to shows like “The Walking Dead” and people’s growing tendency to discuss just how they’d survive a zombie apocalypse, their recent surge in popularity has made them the bacon of horror movie staples.

Based on this video, the zombie apocalypse will involve a lot of people screaming before running away in panic.

A Skeleton Visits A Drive-Thru

You never know what you’re going to have to deal with when you’re working at a drive-thru, but even though every customer is different, each tends to share a similar trait: being alive.

Consequently, I’m willing to assume most fast-food employees would be taken aback to discover the person they’re serving is actually a skeleton (skeletons typically don’t drive cars, because they don’t have licenses or connective tissue). These people certainly were.

The Dancing Pumpkin

This might not be the scariest video listed here, but I think it’s one of the most enjoyable. The step-up is simple: someone with a pumpkin for a head waits in a pile of leaves surrounded by other pumpkins waiting for someone to walk by.

While most videos cut off after the initial shock sets in, this one expedites the process by having the person immediately start dancing after popping out. It’s as absurd as it sounds, and it’s fantastic.

The Trash-Can Surprise

It seems like this video is as old as the Internet itself, but even though it’s approaching its eight-year anniversary, it still manages to make me laugh out loud almost every single time I watch it. I want this kid on my team when the wolfmen finally take over.

The Floating Demon

Worrying about waking up to a demon levitating above your bed might not be the most rational fear in the world, but sometimes the intelligent part of your brain gets drowned out by whatever section makes you fear for your life.

I’m guessing that’s what happened here.

The Spider Surprise

There are a lot of people out there who think spiders are awful creatures that have no place existing on earth or in the universe as a whole, but spiders are seemingly incapable of taking a hint.

As a result, they continue to fuel nightmares around the globe while simultaneously serving as the inspiration for quick and effective pranks. Want to see a grown man reduced to his most basic instincts? Look no further than this video!

Trapped In An Elevator With A Coffin

Unfortunately for the people in this video, the undead corpse in the coffin they’re riding with doesn’t seem to respect the unspoken rules of the elevator, and what starts as an inconveniently unresponsive button turns into something much more terrifying.

Special credit needs to be given to the guy who tried to pry the door open on a moving elevator. I know he was too busy trying not to pee his pants to think things through all the way, but I’m not sure what his long-term plan was.
